Well, to start off, I would like to say that I am really sucky at sports. In elementary school I thought that the coolest thing wasn't the slam dunk or anything, I thought that spinning a basketball on your fingertip was absolutely amazing. Little did I know that there is a physics lesson hiding in that miracle. Those pros like Michael Jordan and whoever else know that to spin that basketball, you need to support the center of mass, or the ball will fall of your finger. The center of mass resides in the very center of the sphere. You will never see a basketball player spinning the ball on its side. Their finger is always on the bottom of the ball, right in the center, supporting the cm.
